Germany has clarified that its new Digital Master Test (dMAT) will not act as a simple pass-or-fail barrier for Indian students applying for selected master’s programmes. According to the German Embassy’s clarification reported by The PIE News, applicants who receive lower scores may still obtain an APS certificate if they satisfy all other applicable requirements.
The new assessment is intended to provide German universities with a standardised reference point for evaluating academic backgrounds across India’s diverse higher education system. It will become an additional component of the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) documentation process for selected applicants from the summer semester of 2027.
What Is the Digital Master Test (dMAT)?
The Digital Master Test, or dMAT, is a computer-based academic aptitude assessment designed for Indian graduates planning to pursue postgraduate studies in Germany.
The test is being introduced to help German universities assess applicants using an additional standardised academic reference, alongside their existing academic records and qualifications.
According to the official dMAT information, the initial phase covers applicants with undergraduate degrees in the following fields:
The requirement applies to eligible applicants planning to enter a master’s programme in Germany from the summer semester of 2027 onwards. Students should check the latest official guidelines to confirm whether the requirement applies to their individual circumstances.
Will a Low dMAT Score Affect Your APS Certificate?
One of the major concerns among Indian students has been whether a low score could prevent them from obtaining an APS certificate.
The German Embassy has clarified that the dMAT is not intended to operate as an automatic pass-or-fail barrier. A lower score does not, by itself, prevent an applicant from receiving an APS certificate, provided the other APS requirements are fulfilled.
However, students should understand that this clarification does not guarantee APS certification or university admission. Applicants must still meet the applicable documentation and verification requirements, while individual universities retain responsibility for their admission decisions.
Why Is Germany Introducing the dMAT?
India has a large and diverse higher education system, with universities and colleges following different grading practices, assessment methods and academic standards.
As a result, percentage marks and transcripts may not always provide a directly comparable picture of academic performance across institutions.
The dMAT is intended to give German universities an additional point of reference when evaluating applicants. It may also provide well-prepared students with another opportunity to demonstrate their academic abilities in a standardised format.
The assessment does not replace the existing APS document verification process, degree recognition requirements or individual university admission criteria.
When Was the First dMAT Exam Conducted?
The initial examination schedule announced for Indian applicants included the following dates:
As of October 2026, the first examination date and registration deadline have passed. Students who are preparing for later application cycles should check the official dMAT website for updated examination schedules, registration details and certificate instructions.
The assessment is administered by the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development (g.a.s.t.).

Does the dMAT Replace APS Verification?
No. The dMAT is an additional requirement for the applicants covered by the new policy.
Students must continue to follow the applicable APS procedures, which include verification of academic documents. They may also need to satisfy degree recognition requirements and the admission criteria established by their chosen universities.
Applicants should therefore plan their applications around all relevant requirements rather than focusing on the dMAT alone.
What Should Indian Students Planning to Study in Germany Do?
Students considering a master’s degree in Germany should take the following steps to prepare for the upcoming application cycles.
1. Check whether your undergraduate degree is covered
Review the official eligibility criteria to determine whether your academic discipline falls within the initial dMAT requirement.
2. Prepare your academic documents
Keep your degree certificates, semester-wise transcripts, marksheets and other required academic records ready for the APS process.
3. Review the dMAT examination requirements
Consult the official website for the latest test format, available test centres, registration dates and preparation resources.
4. Research university admission criteria
Check each university’s academic prerequisites, subject requirements, language proficiency requirements and application deadlines.
5. Plan your application timeline carefully
APS verification, examination scheduling and university applications may involve separate timelines. Start preparing early to avoid last-minute delays.
6. Verify the latest official updates
Requirements can change during the transition period. Confirm the latest information with APS India, the official dMAT website and your chosen university before submitting an application.
Is Germany Still an Option for Indian Students?
Germany continues to attract Indian students interested in postgraduate education, research opportunities and internationally recognised qualifications. The introduction of the dMAT adds another consideration for certain applicants, but the German Embassy has stated that the assessment is intended to improve transparency and comparability rather than discourage qualified Indian students.
Students should evaluate their options based on their academic background, intended specialisation, budget, language skills and career objectives.
Understanding the new requirement early can help applicants prepare their documents, identify relevant programmes and organise their application timelines more effectively.
